Repossessions continue to increase each year. This is a natural result of the lender’s ability, and desire, to extend credit to higher-risk individuals. Repossessions are currently estimated at approximately 1.4 million annually. These vehicles run the gamut from nearly new luxury cars to older, rough condition economy cars. As you are aware, “repos” usually go directly to auctions for remarketing because, in any deficiency judgment, the seller of the repossessed unit must show that he /she obtained fair market value.

Sub-Prime lending yields a large market share for repossessions. Credit is the lifeblood of the used vehicle industry and thus, the increased availability of sub-prime loans during the past 6-7 years has been a boom to both dealers and consumers. Today’s sub-prime industry is very stable, and large players have leveraged their lending capacity by turning to the asset-backed security market. As a result, auto finance receivables at six of the largest lenders in the field continue to grow at a 20% annual rate. As a result, the rates of annual repossessions increase ever so affirmatively.
